The subject of food constantly perks my ears and even more so after my run for the day. As it is right now, I am not working for the next month except maybe a side job here and there. In fact while I am telling all, I haven't worked but a couple days since I got back home on November 2nd!
While training for HURT 2012, mileage has been ramping up and more runs are focused on duration and climbing than on getting my short choppy stride to get a little longer and general speed. Well I already eat quite a lot and there are the frequent days where I will inhale a bag of chips with salsa/guacamole, never mind I just ate a balanced healthy meal.
Well today my run started at 8:30 after lounging around and didn't finish until 3 hours later plus a little walking around the block. I put Quinoa in the rice cooker with celery, onion and garlic. Took a shower. By this time I had not eaten at all unless you include the 200 calories of home made gel that I had on the run (brown rice syrup, dark agave and calm with Cal-mag). I was absolutely famished. I don't normally count calories as I feel I would always be consuming the wrong amounts but for curiosity sake I counted it out. My afternoon eating extravaganza went a little something like this:
Udo's oil about a gulp, straight down (about 150 calories)
Floridix Iron and Herbs 10ml, straight down (25 calories)
Salad
6 cups spinach (75 calories)
some red onion
some celery
1/4 cup raisins (130 calories)
Asian toasted sesame dressing, 3 Tbl spoons (270 calories)
Quinoa
1 cup dry Quinoa (about 500 calories)
1 celery stick
1/8 red onion
1 clove garlic minced
2 tablespoons Olive oil (240 calories)
Soup
pre-cooked vegetable soup heated on stove (8 cups - 640 calories)
Water
about 2 liter
I ate this all at one siting on the living room couch; and quite abruptly fell asleep.
About 30-40 min later I got up and checked my mail and what not and started part II.
Homemade cereal
3 bowls of oats, raisins and rice milk, each containing the following amount/calories:
at least 1 cup dry rolled oats (300 calories)
1/8th - 1/4 raisins (130 calories)
1 cup rice milk (120 calories)
Then as I am cleaning and putting the rice milk back in the fridge I see the cinnamon raisin bagels that I have not touched in a few days, I immediately put one in the toaster oven and spread jelly on it, devour and repeat 2 more times!
1 cinnamon bagel (243 calories)
2 table spoons of jelly (120 calories)
X3
This all in a span of 2 1/2 hours for a grand count of 4,769 calories!!! In basically one sitting if you do not include the food comma; un-be-lieve-ab-le!
My Dad made a joke to me last night, we were talking about people eating more when training for ultras and that some come to the start line weighing more than when they started training, and he laughed saying how funny would it be if you (me) weighed 15lbs more than when you started, ooh boy never say never haha, I love to eat. I love to eat so much there are times when the quit word is passed the "my stomach hurts so much from all the food I have consumed". And some would call it gluttony. Either way "love of food" or "gluttony" the results are the same.
So here are 3 cheers to the days where you are not so square and revel in the chemical that is stimulated when eating food and your brain says "ssssooooooo goooooooood".

Nov 20th to Nov 27 training log
Monday November 21st: Off Was Mr Couch potato and at like I hadn't eaten in a week, oops
Tuesday November 22nd: 90 min bike at gym (was funny 'cuz I kinda got stuck with a turbo class going on and I figured it was only a 30 min class but ended up a 60 min, so I had to just keep pedaling not wanting to really disturb the class) +30 min easy on treadmill
Wednesday November 23rd: 6 mile loop on mostly grass around Kapi'olani park and Ala Wai in a.m.
6 mile loop p.m. same as morning easy effort
Thursday November 24th: 15 miles 2:17.
2.75 to Nature Center, Tantalus Triple Trek loop (10 miles give or take) 2.75 back.
Friday November 25th: 1 hour yoga at gym + 45 min spin class
Saturday November 26th: Night HURT loop 4:16. Started at 6:30pm finishing just before 11pm. Pushing mostly on the climbs a little as I wanted to build a little fatigue for the next morning. Lots of fun, real windy, rained most of the time, lots of mud all good ingredients for a blast on the loop. Stomach felt a little backed up, think I was eating too much PB&J sandwich at one time. Got to try a concoction me and my Dad made up (he calls it Nunnzini - something of that spelling [:) Its pretty sweet but it seems to go in to the system well enough, got a little tweaking to do with the electrolytes/minerals I think though.
Sunday November 27th: Morning HURT loop, 4:36 (including 3-5 min of talking with the McAllisters and other runners [: always great to talking with them, real nice folks) starting at 6:30 am. Legs real flat but felt they were quite responsive but might have been pushing a little to hard or something as my stomach didn't seem to be absorbing much of the water, sandwiches and such; miles 8-20 were pretty rough and was seriously bonking with 4 miles to go, took 1 1/2 power gels and that seem to help, but it seemed like everything that I ate and drank were still in my stomach. Aside from the tough patch my legs felt like they could have repeated another 4:10-4:20 loop without too much effort.
Pretty productive week, though the mileage isn't superb compared to what others might do, I feel my body is toughening up for the next few weeks leading up to the race in January.

The last 6 weeks
November 21st 2011, Monday:
I want to first note the last 6 weeks were the inspiration in starting my own blog; maybe even the last 8 weeks is more accurate.
It all started on the famous South Kaibab trail down in the big ditch, aka: The Grand Canyon. I was on my way to a job in Albuquerque, NM and my boss allowed the off route excursion of which I was so grateful. The beauty surpassed all the photos I had seen as a kid reading SRA cards.
After the job in Albuquerque we decided to go for a once in a lifetime National parks extravaganza most of which would be in the beautiful Utah state. But first, there was this mountain trail marathon that I had caught glimpse of "The Sandia Mountain Crossing" from an online thread. While this is a low key race, it was not so with me. The views on the climb up were so beautiful! Most of the runners that I was kinda latching on to were probably sick of the "wholly shit that is so beautiful" or "wow look at that mountain". Any way I went ahead and ran my race. I took it pretty conservatively as it climbs from 5900' to 10300' and I was not sure of the effects coming from sea level and never having run at that altitude. Anyway I got 6th, I think mostly by being super patient on the way up and enjoying the view and then hammering on the rolling and down hill parts. And check it out, it was FREE! I got a shirt at the end, the people were great as you usually will find in trail running communities.
From here the trip took off and away we went to Santa Fe, Four Corners, Bandlier Park, Canyonlands (Needles section), Moab, Arches, Dead Horse State Park, Cedar City, Zion (did and 37 mile run from the left side of the park down in to Zion Canyon, absolutely one of the best runs ever!!!), Bryce and then to the Grand Canyon to do the full rim to rim crossing which I will always have fond memories, hiking from North to South with my crazy Canadian buddy Matt. (Thanks Dean for picking us up on the South Rim). I would like to make note that on the first hike which was down South Kaibab and up Bright Angel, I had decided to run up Bright Angel which I did and was very proud that I had ran the whole way. Well when I had reached the top bent over my knees pretty exhausted I came to find there were a whole slew of trail runners doing rim to rim. I found out on the second hike coming from the North Rim that ultra/trail runners do rim to rim to rim. I vowed I would one day come back and test my will in the big ditch!
After getting to my family's place in So. Cal and onward to my home here in Hawaii I started thinking about starting my own blog for my own pleasure and a means to express some of the adventures and experiences while out in the mountains, trails or wherever I may be.
The last 2+ weeks here on O'ahu have been pretty sweet to say the least. To start off, seeing all my friends of who I had missed so very much in the 2 1/2 months I was gone; and the island itself. Maybe it is just me, but there is something very calming about being on an island away from the mainland culture. That is not to say I dislike the mainland at all, quite the opposite but Hawaii will always be a special place for me.
Currently my next HUGE adventure lies in the preparation of the H.U.R.T 100 mile trail race in the hills above my apartment. So the last 3 weeks running/training log has been the following:
-November 1st, Tuesday
42 min moderate/steady pace on the Ala Wai and Kapi'olani Park, mostly to shake out the whole traveling/airplane feeling.
-November 2nd, Wednesday
2.75 mile run to Makiki Nature Center (I will just call this MNC), a Tantalus Triple Trek loop and then a 1 1/4 mile to my friends house. Total: 14 miles with around 2k gain/loss, 2h 11m
-November 3rd, Thursday
Tantalus Triple Trek loop. Was told it was rolled and was indeed 10 miles, but it feels more like 9 just when related to the other trails and time it takes to cover them etc, just an opinion.

Went to gym to supplement the back to back long run. 30 min stair climb, 60 min easy run on tread mill (9min pace), 60 min stair climb, 2 hour run on treadmill at 9 min pace (30 min at 6:50 pace, with a couple pick ups at end of run). Total time 4:30
-November 17th, Thursday
15-20 min jog/shakeout with Tasha down to Derussey and back. Legs super sore from the stair climber.
-November 18th, Friday
Went to gym. 90 min on Nordic cross trainer, 30 min easy on treadmill.
-November 19th, Saturday
Ran to KCC hard effort, hiked diamond head, walked around farmers market and the ran easy pace back home. 8+ miles
-November 20th, Sunday
HURT loop, starting at 5am, 4:33 and then TTT loop with a total of 6:29. Felt really good actually, got to run a bit with Bob McAllister on the TTT loop, he was doing a full loop, and was tempted to do the rest of the loop with him to make it 40 miles, but I had no food left so we parted ways and I finished my run. Took it easy on the steep hike sections to not flare up the left ankle and that seemed to help.

Today I literally did nothing but eat PB&J and sit on my rear end, it horrible but sometimes I feel you got to overly compensate even if other runners don't gorge on fatty food extremely excessively today was just one of those days.
